TONIGHT WITH TRAV RATES “DON’T WORRY DARLING” WITH…
Film Synopsis: A 1950s housewife named Alice Chambers (Florence Pugh) living with her husband, Jack Chambers (Harry Styles) in a Utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding very disturbing secrets!!!
Trav’s Critique On “DON’T WORRY DARLING” ➡️ Oh, darling; my Darling… When I think of a film being classified as a psychological thriller – after I stew and marinade on this film, I can see it being placed in this genre, but still after what I saw and having time to think on it – I will still stick to my overall conclusion that there was not really anything “actually thrilling” or bone-chilling in the movie to give me the shakes, or quivers that it might lead you to think from either previews or advertisements.
The film DOES give a great convoluted perception of what you will be walking into and what to expect from both main characters, Alice and Jack Chambers. I will applaud Florence Pugh’s performance- hands down! She played the model 1950’s housewife just like Norma Bates only she was not psycho! LOL…she was the MOST rational and lucid character in the film. As much as I’d love to tell you that the movie takes you on this journey of playing detective; sadly, it doesn’t.
There are not enough clues and information given to us for us to even begin to decipher what is going on with the husbands’ as it pertains to what they do at Victory Headquarters; what is the nature of their jobs; where they drive to each and every morning; how much money they make; the wives are NOT allowed to question their husbands about anything that they do at work; the wives are not permitted to leave outside of certain parameters; there are rules that cannot be questioned at all. Imagine living in a world like that. Could you – or better yet, would YOU want to live like that?
Well, Alice could not. Something did not seem right to her after years and years of living like that and having someone that she cared about plea and beg for help, and no one listen? Being under someone’s control and thumb every second of every single day? As I was watching the film, I must admit it did intrigue me, but the film does not fully satisfy you; well, it did not satisfy me. I just kept on waiting for something more to happen…The constant repetition of the daily lifestyle was driving me insane! I couldn’t do that as a husband! Leave at the same time! Everything! How is that a perfect life? A perfect lie? Indeed! Yes!!
I sincerely felt like MORE was needed. Perhaps, that was the intention of the film, to leave gaps throughout the film for us to fill them in, but I still feel all of the events should have come together and been explained; scenes should have been shown with the husbands to have the film making sense showing them at work – NONE of that was shown and I feel that was relevant because all of the husbands were working together at the same company for one common goal, so why not have ONE scene of them at work, huh?
If you’re going to make a film, make it right – and make it make sense, logical sense. The way that the overall movie played out, I can see how it ended the way that it did. The ending made sense the way that Olivia Wilde did it since she was the Director of the film. But me personally, I did not agree with it and so did the audience because when you hear an auditorium packed full of people start to make negative comments and say, “aww man, NO!” That is NEVER a good sign.
Therefore, don’t worry darling – you will get your shot to dive into this mystery that might keep you guessing up until the end – or you might be able to figure it out. Who knows, but I will say this – what is on Alice and Jack’s menu for the first hour of the film…very scrumptious, Darling! Oh, Darling…come and get some!
I cannot wait to see!! Going Monday with my youngest! My oldest went and saw it last night! Without being crude here lol. A mind f*** were here words!!!!She’s a HUGE Harry Styles fan! She warned me the first hour you’re like….”Wtf is happening, I’m lost etc … ” I love Pugh. She is amazing. Midsommar is crazy!
Well, it will not make you lose your brain cells – but it is technically not all over the place, but I felt that there were definitely some inconsistencies throughout the film. I just felt like I said in my review – it was just incomplete to me like Olivia Wilde was trying to do to use what Jack was trying to do to them in the damn movie, basically! I went into the movie with my own ideas about what I thought it was all about and let’s just say I was not far off base…I’m sure you will come back and tell me!

I’m curious how Olivia did for her first directorial debut, but that’s the only reason I plan to see it! Also seeing Harry as an actor; I’m curious from the trailer he looks like he did a good job – and it was the box office hit this weekend, but I think that’s based on the publicity of the film also loved the throwback to the 50s poster style. I hear what you mean on gaps but, I think that’s where as you said it we are to use our own conclusion/s to fill it in.
Olivia directed “Booksmart” – and other films before this one. So, what technically makes this one her debut? Because her BF Harry and a list of A-List stars are in it? LOL! So, you’re not a “wild” fan of Wilde? Haha!I could easily see how it was the No. 1 movie this weekend, though. It was advertised so SO SO so so much like Dunkirk I actually got tired of seeing it even though I wanted to! Harry did do a great job, but not as great as Pugh!
Oh, really? I wasn’t aware of “Booksmart” -LOL – I guess it didn’t get the kind of publicity this movie did! Love Florence Pugh though!! She was great in “Black Widow!” A movie’s success comes from its marketing. Everyone knew what this movie was because of the papers being served at ComiCon; the alleged bad blood between Pugh and Wilde; and not to mention the spitting on Chris Pine by Harry Styles @ The Cannes Film Festival. So, even though there was a lot was negative publicity….it was still publicity…
I’m still sticking to my original thought about the publicity concept/ I agree 100% about the way films are advertised is how they are well known about getting the film recognized and “out there” to the people; the audiences – for sure! This film was one of them that did that, and I can think of several more like this one! Yes, Pugh has always been great – even in “Midsommar” which I was hesitant to see actually. I did not hear about the spitting event in Cannes, but I did read about a lot of the negativity on set and the history behind Pug and Wilde and having to recast Shia LeBeouf with Harry Styles. I could not help but to think if Olivia Wilde has a little bit of her character of Bunny in the film in her??? Is she a Director that people would want to work with? Look at what happened with Megan Fox and how no Director wants to work with her now. I have to step back and wonder…it makes me think…
